This is because of the networking limits. This problem has been already discussed in many topics here, so I won't go into the details.

And I agree the sky boxes could look better.

Sometimes, even after running glvis on Hexen.Wad, the sprites start flashing in and out when I walk into certain areas. Can this be fixed?

Yes, it's because of the net limits. I tried to fix this by adding a little hack for single-player games, but not completely. In the next version it will be completely implemented and that will reduce flashing in single player moderately.

Another problem is the skyboxes. While the idea has merit for mods, it actually looks quite hideous in all the original games because you actually see the whole sky texture on the celing...this would be ok if the sky texture didn't have a mountanous horizon line! It totally destroys the illusion. Now Doomsday on the other hand uses a circular effect for the sky and while imperfect, doesn't have the jarring effect the skyboxes do with mountains floating in the air. Is there some setting I'm missing about those skyboxes that would make them look better? If not, could the Doomsday sky technique be implemented as a selectable option?

I will think about this.

Finally, OpenGL vs. D3D...I find that OpenGL Vavoom runs much smoother than D3D on my Radeon card. Problem is, (at least in Hexen anyways) the blood particles are perfect circles the size of a shoe eyelet. Not very realistic or eye pleasing in the least.

If you wish, you can disable point parameters extension. Just go to console and type:

gl_ext_point_parameters 0
vid_restart

Ya know.....the Blood 2 source code is avalable....maybe that's worth looking into for a nicer looking blood effect....it'll complement my gory model explosions quite well too.

http://www.the-chosen.com/mods/

Haven't played it. But I'll check it out.
